CNN News RSS plugin for WordPress running up against Godaddy firewall
By braddock | April 30, 2008
I found a cool CNN News RSS feed plugin for WordPress. CNN has about 50 RSS feeds to choose from. I thought a bit of technology news on the sidebar would be a nice addition to my blog. The install is as easy as WordPress plugins get.
Just upload the plugin folder to /wp-content/plugins/ and activate it in the WordPress dashboard. I started getting excited when I went to the new CNN tab under Manage in my dashboard. There are some awesome CNN feeds to choose from. I might just choose two, or rotate the feed.
Hold on though, because when I put the php call for the plugin in my sidebar all I see on the page in php errors. Things just got sticky.
I went to the support page for the plugin and found out it uses an fopen request to get the RSS feed. The Godaddy firewall blocks fopen requests. Again we do our little dance Godaddy.
I have to get a whitelist exception for the CNN RSS servers to get this plugin working. I fired off a support email to Godaddy, but I’ve got a feeling I’ll be looking for another way to bring news to my site.
