I installed Google Adsense on my blog today

By braddock | April 27, 2008

I set up my Google Adsense account today and have placed some ads around my blog.  The signup with Adsense is pretty straightforward and if you already have a Google account or Gmail address it really cuts down on the sign up process.

They say that your site will be reviewed prior to acceptance and that can take 1-3 days.  I got an acceptance email within 30 minutes though.  I went through the ad setup and selected an Adsense for content ad for both text and image ads.  The 180 x 150 rectangle fits nicely at the top of my sidebars, and I placed the 160 x 600 skyscraper at the bottom of my left sidebar.

You get to pick your color scheme too.  I chose colors that would blend into my theme and not show obvious borders or contrasting backgrounds.  Once you have made your color selections you can preview your ad and even save your color scheme for later ads.

Next you assign channels to your ad.  The whole channels thing is still not clear to me.  Channels are supposed to describe the placement of the ad from what I can gather.  They say you can label each ad with multiple channels.  Many sites claim the more channels on each ad the better.  I just put one channel on each ad telling advertisers roughly where my ad spaces are located in my theme.

The ad generator then kicks out some html to paste into your site, blog, forum…whatever.  I decided to use Martin Fitzpatrick’s Andsense Manager plugin to help me place the ads around my blog.  You copy the html that Adsense generated into the plugin and it gives you a simple php call that you can insert anywhere in your site.

There’s a weird sense of anticipation as you wait to see what kind of ad your site content generates.  All that fancy Google analytic code is crunching my blog into relevant tags and matching it with advertiser’s requirements right now.  I hope I don’t get ads for fast weight loss or adult diapers.  Crap, by putting those two phrases together in a post I’m bound to get that now.
