Creative Commons License

You’ve probably seen little buttons like this on some of your favorite web sites, it’s a Creative Commons license and it’s helping to protect your hard work and the free spirit of the Internet.

The Creative Commons license is a middle ground between a world of oppressive copyright where all works are regulated and the opposite end of the scale where it’s open season on creative works and artists have no protection.

The beauty of Creative Commons is that you choose how you want your work to be used.

When I come up with ideas for my blog they’re never pure little diamonds devoid of outside influence.  My ideas are a combination of the thoughts and opinions of others combined with and shaped by my own knowledge and experience to create something unique.

Can you imagine an Internet where all content is regulated against adaptation and interpretation.  I’m envisioning a pretty stale environment, not a place conducive to new ideas and collaboration.

If you’ve never really considered the licensing of the content on your blog, it’s a good time to do so.  The process is easy and you’ll get the code to place a button for your particular Creative Commons license on your web site.  I put mine in my footer.php.  Yes, even a humble WordPress blog should state its intentions for its content.  You can learn alot more about Creative Commons at their site.  Here’s one of their videos that captures the idea pretty well:
