Use the Creative Commons search in Firefox to find images you are free to use on your blog

By braddock | May 21, 2008

creative-commons-search-choose Blogs must have images.  Nothing makes a post come alive like a great picture.  It can be hard to find the right pic for every post though.  If I can’t take the picture myself I usually turn to Flickr.

Flickr is full of images that are licensed under Creative Commons for you to use on your blog.  But not every photo you see on Flickr is licensed for your use.  I hate it when you find an amazing picture on Flickr and it isn’t licensed for download or inclusion on your blog.  If you try to download photos like that all you’ll gather is a bunch of empty spaceball.gif files.

creative-commons-search-result I found out you can actually customize the search box built into Firefox to only return content that is licensed for you to use.  Just click the little drop down to the right of the familiar Google “G” and select the Creative Commons search.

Once you have done your search you can further filter your results by selecting a site to search.  There’s a tab there for Flickr.  You can tell the search to only return images you can use and modify.  You can even filter out images that are licensed for you to use commercially.

It’s a great shortcut I never knew was there.

Great tip Braddock—I was unaware of this myself.

    I’ll be using that one.
