WordPress.com stats plugin and the mystery smiley

By braddock | April 28, 2008

Give me stats. I must have stats. I installed the Wordpress.com stats plugin on my blog and I love watching that little line graph of site views go up. You’ll have to create a WordPress.com account and get an API key before the tracker will work though. Once you’ve activated the plugin and pasted in your API key it will start tracking site views and other stats. Just how reliable are those stats though?

The WordPress.com stats plugin puts some php coding in your footer.php and registers a view every time the footer is loaded. It creates a little smiley at the bottom of all your pages too.  Its tiny and very easy to miss, but if you see it on someone’s site you’ll know what’s going on.  This must help WordPress.com track your page views.

The plugin isn’t supposed to track logged in users, so I hope my views as administrator aren’t being counted. What does this mean for my other registered users? Are their visits being tracked? Sounds like no. I’m going to pry myself away from my stats and do something productive now.
